When my boy Danger Mouse invented the album-length Mash-Up with The Grey Album, I'll bet he had no idea what he'd started. Everyone's got a cheeky idea... "I know, lets do The Dead Milkmen vs. P. Diddy! The Did Milkmen! Get it?" Gah. But every now and them some talented fool comes up with a good one...



Like for instance this here project by a British producer known as Bullion. He takes snippets from the Beach Boys' masterpiece and weaves them into Dilla's beats like a pro, and... well, not a hell of a lot more to say... that's what happens, and here's one now...

Time to start another week of hilarity, and awaaaaaay we go...

First off we have Gossip who used to be called "The" Gossip... which I thought was better. So screw those guys...

Dirty Projectors... well, they have one really good song, these Brooklyn-ites... and damn there are a lot of Brooklyn bands this year... and here it is...

Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is The Move (ysi)

That is quite good indeed. So, checking out the album you'd expect more of the same... and you'd be wrong. This stuff is borderline unlistenable. Most of the singing is done by this dude with a high-pitched voice that I think I'd like to strangle and songwriting is super sloppy in the way that Indie Kids find so precious. Interestingly enough, just now looking at the first customer review for Bitte Orca on Amazon, that person likes every song on the record BUT this one. Because that person is retarded like their mom was Sarah Palin. You bet your ass I went there...

Major Lazer gets no love from me because Diplo is part of it, and I've pretty much never liked anything Diplo's ever done except for the first M.I.A. record... that whole Baltimore booty bass/Baile Funk business... guh. This one he does with Switch, who used to be okay before he went all Fidget House... and the result is... a Dancehall Reggae record, because of course it is... miss it. But DO NOT miss...

Who they are: Two brothers who are also in the band Soulwax, but you probably knew that.

What they sound like: Along with our last post, Z-Trip, some of the real founders of the whole mash-up thing. But they've certainly taken it to the next level of lunacy... peep this ridiculous mix they did for BBC Radio 1 last year. The first hour is 420 intros of songs all mixed together... peep the tracklist here... and then the second hour, is, well... they'll explain, just listen...

House Music Friday (Slight Return)

So let's take a quick break from this Blog-achella business shall we? I'll start on Saturday's lineup next week, because you know who starts a whole new project on a Friday? Crazy people, that's who. Besides, I just recently finally found one of my all time favorite House tracks in digital form...



Apparently Ben Watt of Everything But The Girl was mucking about in the studio one day, accidentally dipped his chocolate into the peanut butter and was hit with the inspiration to mash-up the vocal EBTG's "Wrong", a huge hit, with the music track of Soul Vision's "Come Into My Room", itself a huge record in House circles. The result? Chocolately/Peanut Buttery goodness and a track that for my money is even huger than either of the originals...

Hard gettin' up the energy to blog today after an insane Cabo party weekend, but I'm fighting through the pain especially for you...

Silversun Pickups are a decent little rock band, but I blogged on them when they played Coachella in '07, so you can click that link to see what I thought then... and I'm reasonably sure my opinion hasn't changed. Actually today's act played that year, too, but he's gonna get himself a shiny new post, because he's quite good...

Who he is: Mr. Greg Gillis, a laptop mashup guru like no other.

What he sounds like: Kinda like the entire Billboard Hot 100 charts of the last 30 years thrown into a Cuisinart. For instance, this song here samples Big Country, Tag Team, Kraftwerk, The Cardigans, Hot Chip, Flo.Rida, Justin Timberlake, Stardust, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson... oh, just see for yourself...

Blog-achella '07 - Ghostface Killah (Sat.) / Girl Talk (Sat.)

Gonna break a couple rules on the ol' blog today. You say you were unaware that there were any rules for this blog? I'm a stinkin' Virgo, people! Of course there are rules! Millions of 'em! And they exist only in my twisted little brain...

Ghostface Killah

Who he is: Somehow an original Wu-Tang member became the official rapper it's okay to like if you're an Indie kid. Seriously, though, Ghostface's 2 albums from last year were on every blog's year-end top 10 list, right next to Decemberists and TV on the Radio and Joanna Newsom all the rest of the indie crushes. Weird.

What he sounds like: Very, very good. Thick-ass Wu style beats and he is one of the best storytellers in rap. But for my song selection, I'm breaking my unwritten rule of not featuring collaborations, especially not with other Coachella artists. It's just a thing, okay. I like to give everyone their own individual shine, but this song is just too damn good. Such a bizarre team up, but the results are sweet...

Ghostface Killah - You Know I'm No Good (ft. Amy Winehouse)

What I think: Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothin' to WHAT? That there song should actually be re-created live at the show, which will be fun. The only reservation I'd have with Ghost is that I've seen Wu-Tang live on TV and it ended up being one of those deals where there were too many guys yelling all at once at it kinda sucked. So, guess it depends on how many people he brings with him. Definitely peep the albums though.

Girl Talk

Who he is: Mr. Greg Gillis of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania... I'm not sure why a dude would pick Girl Talk as a stage name, but I ain't hatin'...

What he sounds like: DJ Z-Trip on crack. But, as you can see in the photo, he's not really a DJ, nor does he claim to be. His album, Night Ripper, was all made on his trusty laptop, and honestly, not even someone of Z-Trip's skillz could recreate it on turntables. Over, oh, 45 minutes or so, he takes bits and pieces of 164 different songs and just throws 'em in the blender on "Jucify", and the result, well... here's where I break another rule. Although the album is split up into "tracks", you really just can't properly experience it in three minute snippets... so here's the whole damn thing...
