Hullabaloo 3 Repost Redux

We're only a couple days away, so just in case you missed it the first time... here is the only Christmas mix 100% GUARANTEED to make your relatives all like "WTF?!?!?" when you put it on. And you know you wanna see that. So once again... enjoy! And here's a sneak preview posted for no other reason than to get this post on Hype Machine... although you'll enjoy having this separately for your own future mixtape purposes, no doubt...

Shawn Lee - I'll Be F**king You This Christmas (ysi)

And now, faithfully copied and pasted translated from the original manuscript...

Ho Ho Ho, Pimps and Hoes!

Hey, is that reindeer shit on the ground? It is? Well then, it must be that time of the year... time for the quasi-annual Happy Holiday Hullabaloo, the most popular Christmas mix series since "Conrad Murray's Merry Mixtapes". NOT for the kiddies...

High Quality 320 kps download avaialable here. OWN IT FOREVER, LIKE A COLLECTIBLE PLATE!

Bearish on Beats

If I have any readers left after the ass-wiping revelations discussed in my last post, this one's for you...

This might just be one of the best early morning House records I've heard in a good long minute... and I have (for what it's worth) heard a lot of House records in the early morning. It comes German producer Gabor Schablitzki who, luckily for us, decided to go by the far-easier-to-spell handle Robag Wruhme. As you can tell I meant that sarcastically. Germans and their stupid German words. I just got this German Beer the other day that's name was like one 36-letter word. The fuck? Anyhoo, the only other salient point I can think of about Mr. Robag is that from the looks of his headshot, I'm going to guess his favorite animal is the bear, if you know what I mean... merely and observation, mind you...

Robag Wruhme - Donnerkuppel (ysi)

Hmm... is that all for now? I think that's all for now. Good day...

08 December 2011

Not terribly ambidexterous...

So it's been pretty hard getting blog posts done the last couple of weeks... since I squashed the middle finger of my left hand in my car door like a damn idiot. Now, don't call off work or anything... I'm okay. But it's been pretty wild seeing just how hard it is getting by on just one hand. You don't even realize what you do with a certain hand until you can't, ya dig? What I'm trying to get at, and what I only share here because I know no one reads this is this... the horrifying discovery that I cannot, for the life of me, properly wipe my ass with my right hand. I mean, normally I am a tidy, efficient wiper... but trying to do it with my right hand, you'd think I'd just been potty trained or perhaps even had a touch of the palsy. Especially shocking since I'M FREAKING RIGHT HANDED. Paradigm shifted...

Not that any of that has anything to do with today's song. It's by Dub Syndicate, one of the many projects of famed Dub practitioner Adrian Sherwood... this one came out when I was in college and I fell quite in love with it for the Jim Morrison samples, which is the kind of thing that white college kids do...

Dub Syndicate - Stoned Immaculate (ysi)

Okay, I'm gonna be late for wiping practice. Toodles...

Mix-eltoe & Holly

Ho Ho Ho, Pimps and Hoes!

02 December 2011

Of unfortunate metaphors and stupid puns...

Just in case you missed it, be sure and check out the brand new holiday mix before you read on. Go ahead, I'll wait...

...

...

That shit is merry as fuck, ain't it? Damn skippy! Anyhoo, moving on...

So what happens to a Jazz standard when it falls into the hands of a Free Jazz lunatic? I'd imagine that in some cases results aren't pretty... that the tune is roofied, taken behind the shed and thoroughly defiled... but here Sax man Archie Shepp treats this Duke Ellington classic like a lady. The worst he does is show her a little porn... but it just kind of excites her a little and she goes to bed thinking naughty thoughts and maybe uses a banana for something...

Archie Shepp - I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good) (ysi)

But seriously, go get that Christmas mix. DON'T BE A GRINCH, BINCH! Get it? Binch! Ha!

Blowing You (Away)

I'll see if I can get this one in before these crazy winds blow my narrow ass all the way to Pacoima...

Funk D'Void is a Scottish dude with a Swedish name (Lars Sandberg) who's been making pumpin' Techno jammies for the legendary Soma label for quite some time now. Wait a minute... did I just type the phrase "pumpin' Techno jammies"? I did? Wow. Anyhoo, this jammy isn't really all that pumpin', of course... as I follow my usual practice of telling you one thing then giving you another. I'm a dick like that. This is the last tune on the record... a nice, relaxing coda to all those... sigh... you know...

Funk D'Void - Sueno For Someone (ysi)

And if you don't believe me about that wind, I offer you this scene from my neighborhood this morning...

Sign 1, Nissan 0 F

Damn!

28 November 2011

Drop the zeros and get with the hero...

Just got time for another quickie today...

J-Live has been doing his thang under the radar for a long time now. And well. Stop listening to bullshit Hip-Hop and rekkanize, bee-yatch!

J-Live - Watch Sun Watch (ysi)

(Did I mention I'm also feeling a bit aggro today? I didn't? Well fuck you, then... :P )

22 November 2011

Gobble Gobble, Bitches!

This is probably the only post of the week, so SAVOR IT!

The Mood Mosaic series from Italian label Discomagic has no less than a dozen installments of jazzy, funky '70s soundtrack & library-type grooves, but that's not why it first caught my attention. No, I was swayed by the fact that most of the installments have naked boobies on the cover. Pretty much every one but this one, of course. But Photobucket won't let you post pictures of boobies, so it's all for the best. Ernie Wilkins wasn't famous, but as an arranger and bandleader worked with some of the best... unless you don't think Count Basie, Cannonball Adderley and Buddy Rich (to name a few) are some of the best, in which case you are stupid. And "Evil Ways" is, of course, a Santana cover. Dig it...

Ernie Wilkins - Evil Ways (ysi)

Have a happy Turkey Day, folks...

18 November 2011

When Big Beat Walked The Earth

You remember that time don't you? When Fatboy Slim was King, Moby was Queen and Barack Obama was just another student in Muslim Socialist School in Kenya...

Supercharger weren't exactly superstars of the scene, but they put out a couple of nice records and were a good time live... I saw them open for Mr. Cook one time and they dressed up in full Victorian garb with the white wigs and all and did their thing. Jolly good. Based on the costumes, I gotta imagine that they considered this to be their theme song...

Sucpercharger - Bouffant Idiots (ysi)

FYI... in the U.S they had to go by the name Supersonic because an American band was already using Supercharger. SO SUCK ON THAT, ENGLAND!

17 November 2011

Not For Dweebs

Checking back in with the L.A. beat scene today...

I actually saw Teebs live earlier this summer... I say actually because I hardly get my geriatric ass out to shows anymore. All those noisy kids and GODDAMMIT IT'S DRAFTY IN HERE! I never get tired of that joke. You probably do, but that's neither here nor there. Anyhoo, saw Teebs at this Brainfeeder show at MacArthur Park while this crazy big Mexican soccer game was going on at the other end of the park. Also, got a fake ID which was kind of stupid since I'm 40... but hey, that's what you do there. The sound that night was actually pretty shitty but the music certainly wasn't. Dig it...

Teebs - Why Like (ysi)

It looks like Teebs does all his own art, too... dude's like talented and shit. Must be nice...

11 November 2011

"Here giraffe, giraffe, giraffe!"

You know why India is such and up-and-coming superpower? It's because those dudes think of fucking EVERYTHING...

You ever been out trapping giraffes and say to yourself, "Man, I really wish I had the proper music for this task. I would be able to trap these giraffes SO much more efficiently!" WELL WISH NO MORE! Sapan Jagmohan got you covered, son...

Sapan Jagmohan – Giraffe Trapping Music (ysi)

I trapped like 12 giraffes while you were listening to that song... LUNCHTIME!

10 November 2011

Boo-Boom!

I desperately want to own the truck on today's album cover...

The only two things I was able to find whilst Googling The Simeons were... jack and shit. Ha! Ok, the only two things I was able to really find out were that this is their only album and that apparently this guy was a member. Barry Boom? Nice. He should get married to Betty Boo. DOUBLE HA! Well, whatever the story, it's a nice little Dub record. Mad expensive, too. Worth it? You tell me...

The Simeons - Cool Stepping (ysi)

I would not fault you for acquiring this album through nefarious means. Barry Boom however, might stab you. YOU DON'T MESS WITH BARRY BOOM'S PAPER, SON! You have been warned...

09 November 2011

Needless Sexual Innuendo

Hey you got time for a quickie?

Eduardo Castillo is an L.A. based producer/party-thrower and, um... that's all I know. Seems he's pretty new. But hey, he did this dope Balearic remix of Radiohead's "House Of Cards" and I like it quite a bit. Because I am a Radiohead WHORE...

Eduardo Castillo - Casaradio (ysi)

Ahhhhh... was it good for you? Because it was pretty good for me. Got a smoke?

07 November 2011

Yo, hit me up on Friendster, dude...

As I'm currently working on my first ever Hip-Hop record (you heard me), I've currently got an iPod full of nothing but the good-good in search of inspiration. Here's somewhere I've found some...

Blu & Exile are a couple of dudes who need to get their online shit together, for one. The only thing I can find for either of them are half-assed Myspace pages? FOR SHAME! Luckily they're better at music than they are at the Interwebz. Although this was a one-off project, it made several year-end "Best of..." lists in '07 and is considered bonafide new school underground classic. Check out a little bit o'why...

Blu & Exile - Simply Amazin' (ysi)

Both of these cats have since released a few projects collaborating with others. I suggest you go search 'em out...

04 November 2011

The Genghis Khan of Funk?

You know, it's been a minute since I pimped the Tonegents Facebook page, so um... PIMP! I post a lot of groovy bonus content there and only there. So go "like" that shit up real good...

Today's jammy jam comes courtesy of Mr. Nasser Bouzida who is actually from the UK, not Cleveland as you may have guessed from the name. Ha!... Ok, actually I'm not sure if that joke makes any sense, but it kinda sounds like it does so I'm gonna leave it in. SEE HOW THE COMEDIC MIND WORKS! Anyhoo, the man with the odd moniker records under an excellent one, The Bongolian. That, my friends is solid. And so is his retro, dirty Hammond Funk. Dig it...

The Bongolian - The Fatback Showdown (ysi)

Have a great weekend, kids, and remember... you don' t have to let Herman Cain touch you there...

03 November 2011

That's Fairly Disturbing!

So yeah, I missed posting for Halloween... I'll make up with it today with some seriously creepy shit...

That cover's a good start, eh? The dude kinda looks like Seal after a few months of heavy meth use. But that's not Manchester producer Andy Stott in the photo... Andy is a pasty white guy, of course. But homeboy has some dark, dark sounding music on this record. It's slow, sludgy techno that kinda sounds like it's been laid out on the street and torn up by one of those things they strip the top layer of asphalt off the road with when they repave it. It's music for a dancefloor that's submerged in a pool of sulphuric acid. It's... well, it's pretty fuckin' dark is what I'm tryin' ta say. Just keep in mind that this one is by far the "happiest"-sounding track on the record...

Andy Stott - Intermittent (ysi)

I think I wanna put this album on in my apartment, on repeat, at ear-splitting volume for three or four days straight and... you know... just see what happens. I let y'all know how that works out...

28 October 2011

Straight Outta Ljubljana

House Music Friday is making a stop in Slovenia of all places...

That's where Ichisan & Nakova are from, making them the first Slovenians to appear here at Tonegents. For that, they win a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni, The San Francisco Treat! Which, being from Slovenia, they have never heard of. Trust me guys, you'll love it. Sweet Balearic/Nu Disco vibes from the always quality and excellently named Nang Records. Dig it...

Ichisan & Nakova - Tarantela (ysi)

Have a good weekend kiddos. Don't trick or treat at the meth houses...

27 October 2011

Meaty, Beaty, Beardy and Bouncy

I'm not generally one to gush all over artists on this blog, but sometimes I do make exceptions...

Earlier this year during our annual Blog-achella festivities I slathered a heaping helping of savory, frothy man-love onto UK beatboxer extraordinaire Beardyman, all of it rightly deserved. The man live is a mind-boggling spectacle to say the least. But now his studio album is out... how does it match up? As well as it can, I guess. Without the "oh shit" factor of watching the guy do his thing in person, it's all about the tunes... and basically you have a highly original, genre-hopping (but mostly Dubstep) record with a pervasive sense humour that's generally lacking in the dark and angst-ridden world of Wobble. I mean, just look at that album cover. Dude is definitely off his fucking rocker in a very good way. How much of it is his voice and how much is keyboards is hard to tell, but it's not like the guy claims to never use any keyboards (including in the live show) so stop hatin', playa. Just revel in the goofiness (and killer bass) of it all...

Beardyman - Vampire Skank (ysi)

Interesting to say the least. Lots more heavy, heavy beats and extreme silliness on this record for sure. I believe there's a skit in there about Justin Bieber being eaten by a pack of wolves. Man, I can't stop talking about that kid, can I? HE'S JUST SO DREAMY!!! Anyhoo, for more of what the Man of Beard can do live, you need to check this re-donkulous BBC Essential Mix he did earlier this year out as well. Holy shitballs...

26 October 2011

Bieber Fever and the Folktronica Flu?

Feeling a case of Bieber Fever coming on, so I'll make this snappy...

Folktronica! That's a pretty stupid made-up word right there... but damn if it isn't a very fucking good way to describe the sound of British act Tunng (the extra "n" makes it extra devil). It's folky, but at the same time very Tronica. BAM! Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself...

Tunng - Wind Up Bird (ysi)

I'm not kidding about the Bieber thing. My nose is running and my left eye is twitching uncontrollably. I know. Weird. Happens when he's in the building. And if you have no idea why Justin Bieber would be in the same building as me... good.

24 October 2011

Exchange this!

'Bout time I brought you some of the new-new, so here's one of my current absolute favorites today...

My growing man-crush on Dutch producer Nicolay has been well-documented around here of late, but his marquee project (so to speak) The Foreign Exchange would not be nearly as dope with out North Carolina MC/singer Phonte. I don't think there's another rapper in the world who can sing as well as this guy... dude's voice is like butta. And not some cheap-ass butta... some of that super organic butta from cows that had personal valets that you get at Whole Foods that costs like ten bucks a stick. We're talkin' seriously smooth, people. But more about that later. Phonte just released his very first solo record and it's got more rapping that singing... but lucky for us, he's pretty good at that, too. Dig it... oh, and that's not him on the hook, smart-ass. I didn't say he sounded like a girl...

Phonte - Everything Is Falling Down (ysi)

Great jam, but doesn't exactly prove the point I've been hammering on... so please enjoy this video that I'm quite very, very sure is not supposed to be on YouTube in it's entirety...

Now you know what I'm sayin'... boy can sang. That's black for "sing", btw... #themoreyouknow

21 October 2011

Noticing a pattern here...

With the break I unfortunately had to take, it turns out there has not been a proper House Music Friday in over two months. That's a traveshamockery is what that is...

Sometimes the shuffle sets up the comedy so well I think it moonlights as a writer on 2 1/2 Men. I'm kidding of course... because that show is painfully not funny. I'd get bigger laughs from a mass kitten execution. But seriously, check this out. The last HMF installment featured Motor City Drum Ensemble, whom I gave a great deal of shit for not being from Detroit at all, but rather being a pasty little German. So guess who pops up in the shuffle today... an act called Motorcitysoul who are... wait for it... not one but TWO pasty Germans... (long sigh)...

...

...

I think the Germans would get over the huge boner they have for Detroit if they ever actually, you know... went to Detroit. Great music town, don't get me wrong, but I mean-- you know, I don't think I'll say any more. I probably have readers in Detroit. HOW 'BOUT THOSE LIONS!?!?! WOOOOOO!

Motorcitysoul - Space Katzle (ysi)

I'm just waiting now for the next House Music Friday, featuring the Sheisse Eaters... a band from Detroit. BOING...

Funk Travels #46

We've journeyed all over the world in our search for Funk here at Tonegents and today we add yet another new destination...

Nil's Jazz Ensemble was but one of the outfits led by Peruvian sax/flute man Nilo Espinosa, a cat that is still going strong today. And that ends the information I have about Nilo Espinosa. Not a lot out there. But really, what more do you need to know? Favorite color? Boxers or briefs? Exactly. All you need to know is brotherman was dammmmmn funky...

Nil's Jazz Ensemble - Reflexions (ysi)

Now you're not gonna have much luck trying to purchase that record up there in the photeegraph unless you have some eBay skillz and a couple hundred smackers to spend, so click the link below for a nice little compilation called Peruvian Funk that this nugget also lives on...

So Peru got Funk too. Where do we go next? We'll find out when we get there...

18 October 2011

Solo Surfer

Another solo project from another Austrian Downtempo Premier Leaguer today...

For some reason, I expect anyone named Wolfgang to live in a castle and walk around with big puffy white wigs on. I expect a Wolfgang to drink out of a goblet at all times and to have a set of hounds that he may release at will. I mean, don't you? Well you should. It's pretty obvious. Anyhoo, when Wolfgang Frisch isn't releasing the hounds all over some fool, he makes dope Downtempo beats... most notably as a member of Sofa Surfers, but here all on his owns.

Wolfgang Frisch - Jericho (ysi)

And because the world is sometimes a wellspring of serendipity, my shuffle landed on this track exactly four days after Wolfgang's brand new one has dropped. Check the deets on his website and go get that one, too...

17 October 2011

Yum?

Sometimes I blog hand-picked nuggets personally and lovingly selected for your maximum listening pleasure and then painstakingly craft entertaining yet informative words to surround and nurture them.... and then sometimes I take the easy way out...

So I heard this Willie Bobo tune on KJazz this weekend and was kinda lovin' it...

Willie Bobo - Fried Neckbones And Some Homefries (ysi)

And here's a recipe I totally stole from another blog... SUE ME!

Neckbones

Here’s what you’ll need:

* about 2½ pounds of fresh pork neckbones
* If your supermarket doesn’t carry fresh pork neckbones, it means that the po’ folks don’t shop there. Change supermarkets or move to a better neighborhood. ½ cup cooking oil

* 1 Tbsp garlic powder
* 2 tsps salt
* 1 tsp black pepper
* 6 cups of water
* 1 onion, sliced
* ½ bunch of chopped green onions, about 4

Directions:
* Use the ½ cup of cooking oil and brown the neckbones, turning them frequently.

* When the neckbones are browned, add the chopped green onion, the sliced onion and the spices.

* Add water and bring to boil.

* Cover pot with tight-fitting lid and simmer on low for 1½ hours. Stir once or twice.

* After 1½ hours of simmering,Skim fat if desired.

* Simmer 15 more minutes and turn off fire. Stir once.

* Wait 15 more minutes and eat.

Homefries

INGREDIENTS

* 2 tablespoons bacon grease
* 2 tablespoons butter
* 6 medium-sized peeled, cold cooked potatoes, sliced or diced, about 2 pounds
* 1 medium onion, diced or sliced
* 1 cup finely chopped celery
* 1/2 cup chopped green pepper
* Salt and black pepper, to taste
* Dash of seasoning salt, onion salt or powder, to taste

Directions:

Heat the bacon grease and butter in a large skillet over high heat. When the fat is hot, add the potatoes and other vegetables. Lower the heat to medium and cook, stirring them often, until the potatoes are nicely browned on all sides. Season with about 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper to start.

Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until well browned. Stir, taste, and add your chosen seasonings as the potatoes cook. Add more grease if necessary, but not too much. Home Fries should never be swimming in fat.

When the potatoes are brown and crisp, remove them from the heat. Drain on paper towels and serve.

NOTE – When you cook the potatoes, don’t overcook them, remembering that you have about 15 to 20 minutes cooking time when you are frying them. I cook mine just long enough to elimate some of the rawness, but firm enough to hold their shape. Or, if you prefer, you can use raw potatoes, it’s up to you.

Dudes With Funny Names

We visit one half of one of the all-time dynamic duos today, and I'm not talking about that little twerp Robin...

The status of Kruder & Dorfmeister is so legendary in the world of Electronica that one might very well forget that they never even put out a full length record of original music together.

"Whaaaaaa?!?!?"

It's true! As a matter of fact, both Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister have been far more prolific since they parted ways... Kruder with Peace Orchestra and especially Dorfmeister and his Tosca project (with his buddy Rupert, which is easily one of the 10 funniest dude names I can think of, right up there with Randy, Lance and Bruce). Check the chilly chill...

Tosca - Raymundo (ysi)

You know, Raymundo is pretty funny sounding, too. "Rupert, Raymundo. Raymundo, Rupert." Tee hee.

11 October 2011

Because you want honesty...

...I'm going to admit a couple of things to you here today...

I'm not embarassed to admit that, like most white people, I knew nothing Bootsy Collins until he appeared on Deee-Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart". I have no problem with that whatsoever. But the important thing about information is not how you get it, but what you do with it. Too bad I didn't really "do" anything with that information, but that is a pretty good line, no? I think I got that one from an episode of Bosom Buddies... anyhoo, it was more like when I finally discovered P-Funk, I was like "Hey! It's that dude from 'Groove Is In The Heart'!" I'll bet no one at Pitchfork would admit that. BECAUSE THEY'RE DOUCHEBAG POSERS! And while I'm admitting stuff... the real reason I really love this song is because of the extremely dirty remake N.W.A. did. Google it...

Bootsy Collins - I'd Rather Be With You (ysi)

And just for shits and giggles...

You know, I still love that song AND I DON'T CARE WHO KNOWS IT! Sing it, baby...
