Kells Bells

House Music Friday would like to pee on you...

Which could only mean one thing, an R. Kelly re-edit! Now, aside from the undeniable batshit insanity genius of "Trapped In The Closet", not a big fan. Which probably doesn't surprise you. Overproduced slow jams suck. But if there is one appealing thing about R.'s songs, it's the (I assume) unintentional comedy of the over the top sex lyrics. So when some groovy remixers like the Soul Clap boys replace the Pop pap with some boom bap it's all, as they say, good...

R. Kelly - Sex In The Kitchen (Soul Clap Edit) (ysi)

And I leave you to your weekend with this...

"Prolific" Is His Middle Name

Okay, actually it's Francis, but that's neither here nor there...

Plug is one of the many, many, many aliases of Mr. Luke Vibert, who's probably one of the all-time greats of the Electronica game. I hear he's pretty good at the game of Yahtzee, too, but that's also neither here and nor not there as well. Or something. Anyhoo, Plug was his name of choice for the Drum & Bass bizzeats... beats that are more for the head than the ass in this case, but nevertheless quite tasty...

Plug - I Freak Techniques (ysi)

And the great part with ol' Spac Hand Luke, ol' Amen Andrews, ol' Ace Of Clubs, ol' Kerrier District, ol' Wagon Christ... um, did I forget any? Oh right, ol' Luke Vibert!... is that if you like this, you have a solid 436 other releases awaiting for your listening pleasure. Dig in...

Starring Freddie Prinze...

Today's song asks a question to which my answer is Rosie O'Donnell...

Chico Mann (not his real name and I'm hoping a reference to Chico & The Man) (I'm also hoping that at least one person here gets that reference) is a member of the mighty Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra rocking a solo project. And by solo, I do mean solo... homeboy made every sound on the record his damn self. Just like Lenny Kravitz. Ha...

Chico Mann - Who You Runnin' From? (ysi)

And since I am, in fact, quite positive that my Chico & The Man reference is about 15 to 20 years to old for any of you to get (hell, I barely remember the show, and I'm friggin' ancient), here's this...

I forgot Jose Feliciano did that theme song. I need to post on him someday. He's a lot awesomer than you remember...

What's Old Is New Again

The return of a legendary African band today...

I blogged on them quite some time ago after first discovering 'em and in the time since I've decided that Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo from Benin are probably the most amazing band to come out of Africa that doesn't have someone named Kuti in it. Because, and you may not know this, I am the one who decides those sort of things. I won the right in a raffle. Sweet. Second prize was a crock pot. Also sweet. Anyhoo, after a 20-year absence, the Strut label has gotten the band back together and guess what... they still sound pretty damn good...

Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo - Tegbe (ysi)

Interestingly, the Orchestre's debut album from 1973 was also recently re-issued. You should get that, too. Compare, contrast and report your findings to the group...

The Return of This Thing

Finally back after a two week vacation. What's that you say? You hardly noticed? You shut up, you...

I've been on a Disco/Balearic kick lately, so naturally I was pretty stoked to see that lovably crusty old punter DJ Harvey come out with his new record under the moniker Locussolus. Kinda sounds a little like coslopus, doesn't it? I actually opened up for Harvey once or twice on Sunday afternoons at Moonshadows, so... um, well, there actually isn't a "so", I'm just name-dropping. I'm from L.A... it's what we do here...

Locussolus - I Want It

Speaking of Sundays at Moonshadows, if you live L.A. and have never been... well, that's a pretty bad mistake on your part. Not as bad as the time you pocket-called your lady whilst getting a happy ending at the Thai Massage joint, but pretty bad nonetheless...
