I am a little ball of hate.

Anybody who's been hating on Seth McFarlane's job hosting the Oscars can go fuck themselves. There, I said it.

What's that have to do with this particular roots Reggae song by Cimarons? Not a goddamn thing. But I can't remember for the life of me what idea I had for the "words" part of this post. I totally had one, but it's further gone than Deadmau5's steet cred. There, I said it. Dude's a clueless, egotistical little cunt that makes mediocre kiddie music. Can you tell I'm in a mood to vent some spleen today? Maybe this tune will help. Reggae's always got that positive vibration, mon...

Cimarons - Free As Life

Nah, didn't work. So fuck Mumford & Sons, too.

Back at the House...

Wow... it looks like I haven't posted a proper House track yet in the year of 2013. That is a traveshamockery!

So here's a couple of heavyweights teaming up... a couple of guys who need no introduction 'round here. The Timewriter meets Ian Pooley. Boom...

The Timewriter - Booty Song (Ian Pooley's Tummy RMX) (ysi)

Mr. Pooley just put out a new full-length. You might wanna get that... because, you know, fuck Mumford & Sons...

I Won't Wait

I've been watching many of the music awards shows lately, which means I've been seeing alot of Mumford & Sons...

So here's some wicked jump-up D&B biznezz from Ed Rush & Optical, because fuck Mumford & Sons...

Ed Rush & Optical - Temper (ysi)

I came upon the realization the other night that they're the Dexy's Midnight Runners of the Whole Foods set. I kill me sometimes...

19 February 2013

Better than a glass of grass juice.

My new place is right across the street from a Whole Foods. I went over there for a breakfast snack this morning. They don't have donuts, but they have hemp bagels. The fuck is wrong with these people?

Now, I know what you're thinking... you're thinking with a band name like Organic Grooves, you're in for some hippie-dippie fuckin' Sound Tribe Sector 9-type bullshit, amiright? Some Whole Foods Gluten-Free Funk, if you will. You would be pretty likely to avoid it like a grainy soy tube vegan "hot dog". But I'm here to tell you, that would be a mistake! Because despite the unfortunate name, these guys put out four or five QUALITY records as the flagship act of the NYC-based Codek label/collective a few years back. Basically a rotating cast of characters, many of which who ultimately folded into the Turntables On The Hudson camp, their combination of dirty live sounds and smooth electronic beats and bobs was a true example of how to do it right...

Organic Grooves - Caveman Cum Spaceman (ysi)

The Organic Grooves records are a challenge to find these days... EVEN I THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TONE(!) have never found even a digital copy of the first. Someone wanna help a brother out?

Feel The (Self) Love

Here's something really odd...

Look, I don't know exactly what the deal with Senor Coconut is to be honest. He's a German techno dude with, oh, 1 or 2 aliases that moved to Chile and just sort of started doing this...

Senor Coconut - Beat It (ysi)

What does that have to do with Valentine's Day, you ask? Well, just think of what you'll do tonight if you don't have a date. HEY-YOOOOOOOO!

R.I.P. Donald Byrd

You tellin' me you ain't heard the Byrd? Oh you've heard the Byrd, whether you know it or not...

Donald Byrd's music was like a musical gateway drug for me... as soon as I heard it, I started shooting black tar heroin. JUST KIDDING! I didn't touch that stuff until I got into Dan Fogelberg. JUST KIDDING AGAIN! I never got into Dan Fogelberg. But then again, I was never a '70s housewife. For reals though, the man's music opened the gateway to the world of funky Jazz, a world which you may have noticed I tend to frolic in quite often. He's been covered in this space multiple times, so there's not much to add except that he will be missed. A true innovator, scholar and legend. Dig it...

Donald Byrd - Places & Spaces (ysi)

Here's the man layin' it down with Guru's Jazzmatazz from the Red Hot & Cool documentary... start 2:00 in unless you love credit sequences...

The truth. RIP...

Willfully Obscure (And It Feels So Good)

Bloggers like me love when they can give you something we can be almost certain that you probably haven't heard before. Makes us feel all special and deep and shit. So here's one now..

The Grassy Knoll was a '90s Jazz/Downtempo outfit headed by exotically-named multi-instrumentalist Bob Green. And they're a good example of what happened in the late '90s when people who played real instruments started dabbling with Downtempo Electronica. In a good way, though. Some would hear that description, think Acid Jazz, and rightly run away. There were a lot of failed attempts at this sound, to be sure, what with all sorts of tepid beats and meaningless noodling. But this stuff has a nice, dark edge and funkiness to it. Dare I say, slept on. Dig it...

The Grassy Knoll - 1961 (ysi)

So score one for your iTunes collection and one for my sense of self-importance. WIN/WIN BABY!

Da Funky Bus

Want some more excuses? Here's one... after moving I haven't had the Interwebs for a week and a half. So suck on that...

And another result of this whole moving thing is that I now take the bus to work. Glamorous as fuck. Here's another on-the-nose selection from The Fatback Band, who I was surprised to discover was still out there doing their thing with not one but TWO whole original members. Impressive!

The Fatback Band - Bus Stop (ysi)

Yes the bus is funky, and not just the smells...
