Of Meats And Beats

Time for a little Friday quickie before your weekend of grilled meats and libations...

If ever a title described a record better than any clever blogging wordsmithery could ever do, it's this one right here. Just read it again. Any questions? Didn't think so... after all, Tonegents readers have been SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN to be 12.3% smarter than your average blog aficionado, largely due to the fact that you realize that Animal Collective is shit music. That's fucking science, holmes. Anyhoo, here's your taste, courtesy of excellently-named Brazilian Toni Tornado...

Toni Tornado - Soul Negro (ysi)

Actually, this disc would be a great one to put on at your grilled-meats-and-libations event of choice this weekend. Do it...

Playin' through the pain...

Considering how I have both smashed against a building whilst bike-riding AND poured half a cup of (fucking scalding) hot tea on my right hand in just the last 24 hours, you should be impressed by the fact that I can even type this. Just sayin'...

Mr. Graeme Clark aka The Revenge seems to be the dude-of-the-moment in the re-edit world and with bombs like this sweet-ass Marvin refix to his credit, I can see why. Of course, using Marvin for source material isn't exactly spinning gold from poopoo now, is it? Why don't you try something a little more challenging next time, eh? GIMME SOME STRYPER I CAN DANCE TO, FANCY BOY! SHOW ME WHAT YA GOT! Eh... on second thought, don't do that. Just keep churning out good shits like this one...

Marvin Gaye - Heavy Love Affair (The Revenge Rework (ysi)

The Revenge is part of this mysterious OOFT organization apparently, and they are doing some things worth checking out, so... um... check 'em out. Toodles, toddlers...

The Ol' Bait-n-Switch

I know it's House Music Friday and all, but I got this post half-written yesterday so suck on that...

... besides, this is a pretty hip selection. Dare I say, "buzzy" even? I know, I hate that word, too. But anyhoo, get a load of Africa Hitech. They are a Marvel Team-Up of two Electronic music veterans, Mark Pritchard (Global Communication, Troubleman, Jedi Knights & about 267 others) and Steve Spacek (who doesn't have as many aliases, but has done just as much with as many people). The result is one of the more unique records I've heard in a long time, the kind of record it's completely pointless to try and tag some lame genre on. Just call it some next level shit...

Africa Hitech - Light The Way (ysi)

But that's just one song. This thing is all over the place, in a good way. Some of it would make Aphex Twin go "damn"... after all, it is on Warp. And I'll leave you with this video of the boys in action, which is not so much notable for what they are doing, but for the comedy value of the dude standing behind them...

I bet that guy gets laid 30 times a day...

Have a great weekend, fuckos.

In which I resist any references to lesbian porn...

... because it would just be kind of obvious, right? And we hold ourselves to a higher standard around here. Why, if this blog was nothing but a cavalcade of booby and peepee jokes, you'd want nothing to do with it! Nor would corporate America. Nope, that's why we have fantastic, high-class, exclusive sponsors... like Shitto!

It's good to the last plop!

...

...

Yep...

It has been almost 4 years to the day since I posted a Talking Heads jawn for y'all... I love posting on bands like this because I don't have to waste my time telling you who they are or what they sound like or any of that nonsense and I can concentrate on the biting, insightful comedy you've come to expect (see above)...

Talking Heads - The Girls Want To Be With The Girls (ysi)

And I think I'll just get out of here before I give into temptation and have to change the post title...

(Not So) Soothing Nature Sounds

What better way to celebrate the return of Tonegents after a week off than with some FREAKY DISCO MADNESS!

Which comes courtesy of Kongas, a group of French Disco ruffians that were originally led by legendary cat Cerrone... who had already left the group by the time they made this, so that point's kinda pointless, eh? Might as well mention former Major Leaguer Rick Cerrone...

That hair says "Disco" to me!
(Well, either that or "Kidnap Van"...)

Anyhoo, get ready for a percussion extravaganza. There's a male vocal at the beginning that's a bit questionable, but once it moves past that, it's all funky monkey business... and a lion at the end, too.

Kongas - Jungle (ysi)

"In the jungle of my mind"? The fuck? Never heard that one before. Might make for an original pick-up line. My mind is like a jungle baby... it's full of screeching monkeys and deadly snakes... wanna make out?

See you next week

Tonegents is on hiatus for a week in case you were wondering... I have however been posting some stuff on the Facebook page, so now might be a good time to go "Like" that shit up. There's even a dope free album to grab. To the right you will find the way...

Just don't speak of him on planes

And we have an early Album of the Year candidate...

Mr. Barry Lynn is a seemingly lovely young chap from Northern Ireland who records under the name Boxcutter, a name I suggest you remember henceforth. Write it down, take a picture, I don't give a fuuuuuuuuuck. Just do it. Because with his new one up there on the Planet Mu label, he has staked his claim as one of the best guys going. Yep, he has walked up to the big, clean, white couch of musical goodness and sprayed his man-scent all over it. Fantastic, melodic stuff that reminds me of the best of Mu-Ziq... who just happens to run the label. Boom...

Boxcutter - Moon Pupils (ysi)

Aaaaand... I believe I have said my peace on the subject...

In which Prince asks a good question...

"You know how many hits I got?"

That's what Prince asked the crowd as he started his third and final encore Friday Night at the Fabulous Forum of Inglehood (always up to no good). Then he pounded through a quick medley of 5 or 6 huge hits that he hadn't gotten to in the main show. And lemme tell ya, he got to a lot of damn hits in the main show. It ain't braggin' if you can back it up, right? But I suppose we should start at the beginning...

One-upping the traditional "Concert In The Round" format, this was the first ever "Concert In The Unpronouncable Glyph That I Totally Made Up Because I'm Fucking Prince And That's How I Roll"

As far as I can remember, Prince's When Doves Cry was the first 7" single I ever bought, so it's kind of incredible that this was the first time I ever saw the Purple One live. But this $25 deal on a 21-show run in L.A. was just the ticket to right that wrong. Shit, you can barely get lunch and a beer in this town for 25 bucks, let alone a Prince ticket. So I found myself in those seats up there as the show began with... "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..." which... perfect, right? And then it was just on, hit after hit (how many does Prince have again?) after funky-ass hit. No Chaos & Disorder in it's entirety, which was my fear. Hell, Sheila E. was even there and got plenty of time. Ya can't front on Sheila E., kid. So the place was jammin', bodies heck a' slammin... we were dancing like white folks and then we got to move down to join a friend in these seats here...

Not to talk shit, but I hope I'm not that blurry when I'm 52...

Don't you love a high-quality phone camera? Anyways, down at the side for all of the encores, especially the "Purple Rain" confetti drop, because fuck yeah! I won't bore you with the song-by-song rundown... just know that yeah, he played your favorite. And this one, which may be lesser known but was Top 20 on the charts itself... and an unexpected highlight for me...

Prince - Mountains (ysi)

So in summary... Prince fucking rules. If you're in L.A. and don't go see one of these shows, you're losing at life. Oh, and to answer Prince's question, I looked it up on Wikipedia. The correct answer... a fuckload...
