What I think: It seems to me that just about every year, there is a more "poppy" dance act, playing one of the smaller tents, that ends up being the unexpected highlight of my day... I especially recall Junior Senior a couple years back... the acts that are not so much for the headz but for the folks who just wanna have some fun and shake their shit around without having two thousand crazy-eyed, sweaty, shirtless Sahara tent pill-monkeys to avoid. Lemme tell you, one of those guys so much as brushes against you, you're throwin' your shirt out as soon as humanly possible. This year, I think Calvin Harris might just be that act...

Actually, though, he does branch out into some different sounds on some of the excellent remixes he's put out, most notably for Feist and Snoop Dogg(!)... check those out, but here's one of his own...

What I think: I remember seeing a video of him performing at the Ultra Music Festival a few years back and thinking, "huh, he's a bit better than I thought he'd be", which isn't necessarily a slam either. Well, here... see for yourself...



I'll definitely peep him if he's not up against one of the big, must-see acts (although I fear he will be), and so should you, suckaz.

What they sound like: These guys seemed to come up with the rest of the first wave of the Indie Dance acts (!!!, The Rapture) and like those two, have shown to have some staying power. How do they do this? By not sucking. Really, it's just that easy. And while they certainly have some dancier tracks to choose from, I'm gonna give you one in which they sound exactly like The Cure...

Mick must be out of ideas, because this is pretty uninteresting, straightforward Rock... but hey, the song title's got the word "fuck" in it, so it's still totally punk rawk, bra!

Who he is: London DJ of Turkish descent, and the man responsible for the famous Kylie Minogue/New Order mash-up. You know you've done a good mash-up when both of the mashed artists play it live.

What he sounds like: Well, his own productions range from the mash-ups to some darker and weirder tech-house things (check his remix of Klaxons' "Golden Skans") but seemingly he comes to rock it hard live... to wit, here's a full-ish set for ya (it's a BBC Radio 1 rip, deal with it)...

Erol Alkan Live @ Global Gathering '07

What I think: Although he's not really a part of the French House thing, if you listen to that set, you'll see how he might fit in with all those cats... which is maybe even a bit disappointing. I would hope they'd break up the sound a little bit, throw in a little variety, ya know? Guess we'll see...

Who they are: Let's let Wikipedia do the work, shall we? "a band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their musical style has been described as Viking-vaudeville, Manic Gypsy Jazz. Man Man is known for their exuberant live performances. When performing, the members of the band dress in white outfits and wear war paint. The band uses pseudonyms - the frontman is Honus Honus, and its other members are Sergei Sogay, Pow Pow, Critter Crat, and Chang Wang."... oy vey, this does not sound promising...

What they sound like: I got three "S"'s for ya... sloppy, shouty, shitty... here's the song I could find of theirs that came closest to listenable...

What I think: You may be surprised that I find this band to be horrible. Further proof that the Indie kids (who, of course, love them) wouldn't know good music if it grabbed them by the balls in a Vulcan Death Grip. I would rather walk naked into a biker bar with a large neon sign saying "Free Joyrides" and a blinking arrow pointing directly at my ass than listen to another Man Man song... and no, I'm not normally into that type of thing...

What they sound like: Well, here's the big question... because they used to have a 3rd brotha, producer 9th Wonder, and they were pretty darn good at the rap music before. So, has their sound suffered?

What I think: Well, upon listening to this and a few other cuts from their new one... I gotta say yes, the sound has suffered. This production is not up to snuff with what 9th Wonder brought to the table. These jams are sounding a bit too Southern, which in Hip-Hop is kinda synonymous with Suck. But hey, if you want a Hip-Hop fix, have at it!

Now back to Blog-achella, and some people who (as far as I know) do not celebrate St. Patrick's Day. But then again, they're from Brazil, so they don't really need to manufacture ways to get drunk and have fun... they just do!

What they sound like: Ah yes, the Baile Funk. It's kind of like booty-bass music on happy pills. And with lots of yelling in a language I do not understand a word of. In one word... wacky...

What I think: Well, the other word I can use to describe the sound is "fun". This is straight up party music and you'd have to be a bit dead inside to not enjoy it in at least small amounts... that amount, of course, being based on just how much shouting in a language you don't understand a word of you can take. I'll be checkin' 'em out, fo sho.

What he sounds like: From what I read, he is lauded for his mix of House and Breaks... wow, no one ever thought of that before, what a visionary! Actually, he also has super mad skillz with the Pioneer CDJs, too, which I won't make a snide remark about... 'cuz maybe if I got off my butt a little more, I could master some of those tricks... Anyhoo, dude's only got a few productions under his belt, so I chose this pretty good Royksopp remix for ya...

So pretty much all I know about percussionist Ginger Johnson is that he was from Nigeria, got very popular in London in the '60s, and is famous for joining the Rolling Stones on stage in Hyde Park in 1969 for a particularly famous version of "Sympathy For The Devil". That sounds pretty cool... Keith might have still even had some of his original blood in his body back then. Anyhoo, I stumbled across this record some time ago, and it's a percussion-crazy African Jazz affair. Plus it's got chants. We like chants around here...

What he sounds like: There is going to be a lot of French Electro-House (or whatever you want to call it) going on Saturday, and this guy is one of 'em. Actually, I'd say this particular track has a strong Italo feel, but it's right there in the ballpark...

What I think: I imagine I'll been in and out of the Sahara Tent throughout the day to see what the Frenchies are up to. Again, this sound for me is best in small doses. I mean, sheesh, prolonged exposure to those grindy synths is bound to drive someone mad at some point. But more importantly with Kavinsky is that I think I want to grab him, go see if Serj Tankian is still hanging out somewhere, and get my new Zombie friend to eat his brains. I hope this works out, I really do...

Who they are: A band from the Bay Area, which is often a good sign. How about in this case?

What they sound like: For some reason I'd been led to believe that these guys are nothing but a crappy hard rock band, and I think that's how they started out, but it's actually a bit more interesting than that...

Dredg - Bug Eyes (ysi)

What I think: See? Still kinda heavy but not that terrible at all. Between listening to this track and others, it seems Dredg have a little bit of Brit-Rock in 'em... they're unafraid to go big and epic and they have some nice atmospheric stuff going on is some of their tunes... plus the singer is half decent. Color me moderately impressed, but maybe not enough to check 'em out if they're against strong competition... guess that means... "meh".

Happy Monday to everyone. Yep, this past Saturday marked the one year anniversary of my little blog, and I'd just like to say thanks to all you folks who come here and read these ramblings of a record nerd... especially since most of the content here is not fit to be read by anyone, ever. I sort of wanted to make it a big deal with some kinda fancy post, but I spent the whole weekend in a celebratory haze of hookers and blow... and well, you know how those things go. Anyhoo, let's start the week off with a track I have played out about a million times...



... and that track comes from Philly's own King Britt and his Sylk 130 project. And I gotta tell ya, that first Sylk 130 album, When The Funk Hits The Fan, is a stone-cold classic. The second record (an '80s tribute), emmmm... not so much... but at least he's got this one. This remix, however, comes off the CD Single, and is courtesy of none other than Questlove of The Roots, whose wallet definitely says "BAD MUTHERFUCKER" on it...

What they sound like: I've seen the tiresome "New Rave" designation bandied about with respect to these guys, but seriously, what the hell does that mean anyway? Let's just call it nice Indie Dance-Pop... nah, that's pretty lame, too... ah, screw it...

What I think: Out of all the millions of bands playing this kind of music nowadays, I'd say these guys are one of the better ones... they actually have some nice hooks and I'm a sucker for girl-harmonies... and no, that's not code for hot lesbo action, although maybe it should be ;)

It's the last House Music Friday before Daylight Savings Time kicks in, which means... oh, absolutely nothing... hmpf...



Don't let the cute little mousey on the cover fool you, Floppy Sounds' Short Term Memories is a pretty dark album of Tech-House creepery. But again, the amount of information out there on this guy is pretty close to nil. Who they are: A band from Norway... rock the fjords!

What they sound like: They've got kind of a Brit-Rock vibe, striving for the epic and with plenty of keyboards.

What I think: This song is, in fact, pretty epic... but others of theirs I've heard don't quite match the goodness. Perhaps worth a flier... you gotta watch someone during those afternoon hours (unless of course you dedicate the time to getting properly drunk, which is certainly a fine option).

Who he is: Singer-songwriter dude from more-or-less all over the world, and I'm sure the ladies (and the gays) will find him quite "dreamy".

What he sounds like: Don't let the singer/songwriter tag and the somewhat moody looking, acoustic-guitar cradling picture scare you... this guy is actually pretty damn cool. Why? 'Cuz he's got a multi-effect pedal and he's not afraid to use it!

Predictably, just when I thought I was done with the Friday preview, another act was added, and a relatively "big" name at that. But that big name just happens to be System of a Down singer Serj Tankian, whose voice makes me want to dunk my head in a vat of acid. And as much as my Virgo-ness wants total completion-ness... Who they are: A band from Austin, but with a British singer who loomed above them, smug in his cultural superiority... then they called him a queer.

What they sound like: Pretty straightforward Rock.

What I think: That song's the only mp3 I could find for you, and it's actually the worst song I heard by these guys. Go check their Myspace... they're actually kinda decent. Definitely for the "meh" pile as far as actually watching their set, but I see some potential to not suck. "Wow, thanks for the compliment... we think..."

British DJ Joey Negro is a dude that I should have mentioned a few posts ago when I listed some modern purveyors of actual good Disco, but forgot about. So wouldn't you know a track off of one of his many fine compilations would pop up in the shuffle so soon thereafter, as if to mock my ignorance. D'oh! This Peter Jacques Band is kind of interesting. They were the brainchild of a French businessman/part-time DJ and the Italian musical dude he rode the coattails of. But they were also the act that brought the whole Italian Disco scene into the worldwide light, therefore making said businessman beaucoup bank. Businessmen are smart like that. But it doesn't hurt when your Italian lackey can turn out sunny Disco/Funk numbers like this one...

Compost Records Glucklich series of compilations is a pretty neat one. They combine old-school Brazilian goodness with newer, electronic Brazilian-flavored goodness. The Germans love them some Brazilian music. And actually, I once had a chance to ask Rainer Truby, who put this compilation together, about that. We were driving toward LAX and I asked, "So, why is it that there are so many German acts doing the Brazilian music?"... expecting, what with him being one of those people, that he would have some insight into the question. His answer: "Uh, yeah, I guess they do. I don't know, man."... wow. Thanks for that nugget, bro. Go take another hit off the bong while you're at it. Which just goes to show you musicians are talented... but dumb. Anyhoo, todays cut comes from Spain's Wagon Cookin', who also have a newish album out that is teh hotness...
