Blog-achella '07 - DJ Shadow (Fri.) / El-P (Fri.)

Today on the "White Rapper Show"...

(Okay, only one of 'em is a rapper, but they're both white and they both do hip-hop so neener neener neener)

DJ Shadow

Who he is: The pride of Davis, CA... which just happens to be "the most bicycle friendly town in the world". Yeah, they have like bike lanes on every street and all sorts of off-road trails and bike-only drive in movies and McDonald's with bike-thru windows and, well actually it's kinda ridiculous, okay, Davis? We GET it. You got your little niche and you're milkin' it for everything you can. Good for you. Let me pat you on the back and pinch your little cheeks, and now get the fuck out of my sight, you pathetic attention-whore.

What he sounds like: For a large portion of his new album, The Outsider, Shadow for some unknown reason decided to embrace the current Bay Area hip-hop sound, known as "hyphy", which is basically pretty similar to crunk and therefore also pretty similar to shit. Sure the tracks sound nice and all but the whole thing is weighed down by some pretty bad local rappers. So I grabbed one of the other tracks for you which features a tight live band that pops up a few times on the album.

DJ Shadow - Skullfuckery (ft. The Heliocentrics)

What I think: Ah, that's more like it. And check out that live set up in the photo. Need I say more? It's gonna be gooooood.

El-P

Who he is: A New York rapper and producer, most famous for his work with the group (wait, I think it was a duo) Company Flow.

What he sounds like: Serious lyrics over serious music. Abstract poetry over heavy, dense and atmospheric beats. No jokes here. Dammit.

El-P - Everything Must Go

What I think: Love dude's production. He's kinda one for the headz, but I'm sure hell get people up and jumpin' live. What do I base that on? Absolutely nothing, but I'm an optomist :P
