Miles away from the standards...

Another heavy hitter makes a return visit to the blog today...

But this is not the Miles Davis you hear every day. Amandla was his next-to-last album, and gets the gas face from a lot of people who bring up the dreaded word... fusion... aaaaagh noooooo! And while it does resemble that description (the drum sounds are way-'80s) and certainly isn't anywhere near the level of his classics, it's a decent listen. Hey, the dude was 63 years old at this point... cut him some slack and give him some props for trying to stay current. (Actually his very last album, Doo-Bop, in which he gets into Hip-Hop, is really, really good.) Here's the lead-off track, it's got kind of a "city at night" vibe to it... judge for yourself...

Miles Davis - Catembe (ysi)

See, that's not bad. I imagine if Miles were still around today, he'd be jamming with people like Squarepusher and making some crazy shit. Of course, he'd be 81 now... actually he'd probably just be yelling at some kids to stay off his lawn...
